Independence day wish

A few people wrote in Facebook status messages that people who live outside India should stop talking about Indian independence. I tried reasoning with one such, which turned out to be futile and irritating. This is the very reason why I have stopped writing anything on Indian Independence day.

  1. … so have I, Tanmoy, so have I.

Kanchan Gupta has adequately explained (in his latest blogpost, to which you will find a link from my blog) why folks like me no longer like to talk about this issue.

Only I keep remembering more and more painfully how Gandhi never stopped insisting with impatient young bloods like Nehru and Subhas Bose that political independence will not mean anything very desirable unless we simultaneously took major steps towards social and economic emancipation for the masses. The chickens are now coming home to roost.

  2. It is like a Ferris Wheel isn’t it? This argument? Well, never mind them! This is admittedly late but I wish you a very happy Independence Day! šŸ™‚
